Word Weavers: Organic Lifestyle — September 2010

On Saturday, September 4, at 4:00 PM, the program will feature David Lark speaking about Passive House design. Passive Houses are extremely comfortable buildings that consume almost no energy.

We will have in hand Katrin Klingenberg's book "Homes for a Changing Climate: Passive Houses in the U.S.". This book will soon be available from the county library.

Tune in to find out more about this exciting advancement in sustainable design.

Resources mentioned (or not) on the show

I had three books in hand during the broadcast, which we didn't have time to get to. The most accessible to the English speaking layperson is mentioned above. Although there are dozens of books about the Passivhaus concept, most are in German. There are two more which have German and English side-by-side: Cepheus: Living Comfort Without Heating is a collection of case studies from an Austrian pilot project. Details for Passive Houses: a Catalogue of Ecologically Rated Constructions is a library of construction details suitable for designers and builders. However, the opening chapters provide a technical explanation of Passive House theory that may be of use to the general population.

Our guest Graham Irwin has a website at http://essentialhabitatconsulting.com , and he may be reached at 415-258-4501. He mentioned the Passive House organizations at http://passivehouse.us and http://www.passivehouseca.org/ . If he gave any other resources, I'll put them up here after I listen to the recording of the broadcast.
